What is the minimum investment for Australian bonds?

Short answer: Through Candour Capital, most Australian dollar bonds start at A$100,000 to A$250,000. Of the 360 AUD bonds on the range today, 331 (92%) have a minimum of A$250,000 or less and 143 start at A$100,000 or less. Bonds issued offshore usually start higher, often A$500,000 or more. Over-the-counter bank and corporate bonds are for wholesale and professional investors.

Why minimums differ

The minimum comes from each bond's terms: its smallest denomination and how it trades. Bonds issued in Australia and settled in Austraclear are mostly sold in parcels of A$100,000 to A$250,000; bonds issued offshore and settled in Euroclear or Clearstream more often start at A$500,000 or more.

Above the minimum you add in set steps; the most common step on our range is A$10,000.

Retail investors can buy exchange-traded Australian Government bonds and listed hybrids on the ASX from much smaller amounts, but the choice is narrow. Unlisted bank and corporate bonds are generally offered only to wholesale investors.
