Where growth emerges and where investment returns ultimately accrue are not always the same thing. That distinction surfaced repeatedly throughout the two days we spent at the 2026 Citi Australia & New Zealand Investment Conference in Sydney.
Artificial intelligence offered perhaps the clearest illustration. As investment in computing capacity, semiconductors and supporting infrastructure accelerates, the conversation is moving beyond technological potential towards a more fundamental question: who will capture the economic value, and how sustainably?
This also reflects a broader challenge facing investors. As capital becomes increasingly concentrated around a few dominant growth narratives, the distinction between long-term opportunity and current valuation becomes particularly important.
Against a backdrop of evolving monetary policy, fiscal pressures and shifting credit conditions, the discussions reinforced the value of disciplined asset selection and diversification, with fixed income presenting opportunities that extend beyond its traditional defensive role.
Interestingly, the same emphasis on translating potential into tangible value carried through to conversations about the future of wealth management. As AI becomes more deeply integrated into financial advice and operational processes, the focus is shifting from technological capability alone to how effectively it can improve decision-making, strengthen governance and enhance client outcomes.
This becomes increasingly relevant as Australia's retirement landscape evolves. Greater wealth complexity and the growing need for sustainable retirement income are placing new demands on financial advice, where technology can support efficiency and accessibility, but experience, professional judgment and an understanding of individual circumstances remain essential.
Perhaps the most valuable perspective from the conference was how closely these developments are connected. The same structural forces reshaping global capital allocation are also influencing how investment solutions are developed, how advice is delivered and what investors will expect from wealth management in the years ahead.
For us, these discussions are an opportunity to challenge established assumptions, broaden our perspectives and continually refine how we interpret markets and approach investment management.
Our thanks to Citi and the speakers for two days of thoughtful discussions and valuable industry insights.
